We were commissioned to design, manufacture and install a main feature staircase for the renovation of an old Chapel. The client wanted an industrial ’New York’ apartment twist rather than a traditional solid wooden staircase that could have been quite light inhibiting.
The challenge that faced us was to create a spacious environment whilst abiding by the structural and building control regulations. In addition, we needed to use materials that complemented the living space of a private dwelling rather than a workshop or commercial office.
Working with the client & contractor, we designed and constructed a more contemporary style staircase to give the room an air of a warehouse, which in return gave the illusion of space. We opted for using raw mild steel, grinding away welds and treated with a clear varnish rather than a one-dimensional powder coating. The threads were formed in hardwood timber to soft the feel of metal threads.
