THE TRIANGLE

THE DETAILS:

Client: Cambridge Assessment

Contractor: Bouygues UK

Location: Cambridge

Duration: 52 weeks

Value: £1.4m

THE BRIEF:

Our brief was to design, fabricate, finish and install architectural metalwork, security fencing and auxiliary fabricated items for a project that was to bring all Cambridge Assessment’s staff under one roof - from 11 different locations spread across the city.

Called The Triangle, this new international headquarters, was on what was previously Cambridge University Press’s Edinburgh Building on Shaftesbury Road Cambridge, to the South-East of Cambridge city centre.

The project included us designing and installing:

  • Secondary steel work to the feature tower
  • Removal access ramp and balustrades
  • Security fencing
  • Automated gates
  • Aluminium elephant grating
  • Feature stair case
  • Stainless steel balustrades
  • Timber bin stores

THE CHALLENGE:

We had to overcome various challenges, including its proximity to a nearby conservation area and varied layouts of the buildings. We were also required to create an external façade designed to break up the scale of the building and develop an inviting main entrance of a lower height than the rest of the building and a landmark feature at the gateway into the city. In addition, we had to be mindful of the university’s character while implementing landscaping to soften the building form, provide navigation pointers around the site, and create bio-diverse, healthy and inviting leisure spaces for staff and visitors.

THE SOLUTION:

Our remit following the architect’s brief was to provide Bouygues UK with sample materials and designs comprising of:

  • 500 metres of brushed 316 stainless steel for the internal and external balustrades
  • 200 metres of galvanised 358 mesh and galvanised box section posts for the security fencing
  • Five tonnes of galvanised steel for the ramps
  • Ten tonnes of secondary for feature tower
  • 80 meter warm to touch coated handrails
  • 700 metre2 aluminium elephant grating for walkways
  • 60 metres of treated home-grown British softwood
