THORNE TURN WASTE RECYCLING CENTRE

THE DETAILS:

Client: Central Bedfordshire Council

Contractor: Morgan Sindall

Location: Thorn Turn, Dunstable

Duration: 40 weeks

Value: £300k

THE BRIEF:

Our brief for this project was to design, fabricate, finish and install security fencing and auxiliary fabricated items for the Thorn Turn development for Central Bedfordshire Council.

The area, which is located between the A5 just south of Chalk Hill and Thorn Road that runs from the A5-M1 link road to the A5120, has been turned into a new multi-use site that includes a new household waste recycling centre and a highways depot.

The development also includes a trade waste service and a salt barn for storing the salt used on roads in the winter.

The project included:

  • Security fencing and gates
  • Ramp balustrades
  • Debris fencing to prevent spread of recycled materials
  • Automated rising arms
  • Boundary fence to Lagoons

THE CHALLENGE:

The key challenge for this project was to build a new facility that was in keeping with the environment, practically fit for purpose, secure and low maintenance.

THE SOLUTION:

We met the design brief on time and within budget as our remit was to offer best value products that were practically fit for purpose, sustainable to the given environment and commercially feasible. The solution was to offer galvanised steel and treated timber products with a minimum life guarantee of 15 years. Work consisted of:

  • 1150 metres of 2.4m high galvanised steel palisade to the offices and yard
  • Six pairs of security gates to match
  • 700 meters of post and wire stock fencing
  • Five sets of timber field gates
  • 400 meters of post and four rail fencing
  • 100 meters of galvanised mesh debris fencing
  • Armco barriers to front of buildings
  • Auxiliary steps
  • Painted bollards
  • Berry beam parapets
  • Bird spikes
  • Automated rising arm barriers
